Math Task Cards Gr. 2, Alison’s Montessori

• The Math Grade 2 Task Cards set aligns with the Common Core States Standards using the Montessori math materials. This set serves as concrete evidence that Montessori math education is comparable, and exceeding traditional math standards. Whether it is in a classroom or home environment, Math Grade 2 provides a measurable mode to determine how a Montessori education is timeless, and it also allows children to apply their skills in different context, independently.
• There are 10 tabs to separate each standard: 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10. I will explain what each standard consists of below. Please refer to this link for the Common Core State Standards. Each tab offers opportunities for the learners to practice specific skills using the Montessori Math materials. I will show step by step how this material is organized.

How it works

• I made the cards available on the shelf, and use a Record Keeping sheet so that my learner could keep track of which cards have been completed. We did the first cards together so I could bring some guidance if needed. My learner used graph paper from his binder, and wrote the first standard reference number on top (2.2). He then copied the number of the card he was working with (#1, #2…), and kept checking the control of error on the back of the card. I was hardly solicited, which indicates that the cards are promoting math independence. I will now describe what to expect from each set below:

2.2 – Understanding Place Value

• This set of 20 cards provides opportunities for the children to work on place value using the large bead frame, expand numbers (23 is 20 + 3), and practice lesser and greater numbers classification (___ < 600 < ___). The control for errors is located on the back of the cards when applicable.

2.3 – Writing Fractions as a Number

• This set of 16 cards involves the use of concrete fraction cutouts, or fraction insets. Children compare a whole to fractions, and are invited to trace and label their work. The children get to write fractions in numbers and also spell them.

2.4 – Adding/Subtracting using Word Problems

• This set of 16 cards is a series of Word Problems on adding and subtracting. Word Problems have been stressed by professionals, and is highly recommended as some children have been found unable to put their skills into practice given new contexts. The control for errors can be found on the back as well.

2.5 – Working with Money

• This set of 20 cards provides learning opportunities for adding monetary values and using the cent and dollar signs, as well as the decimal point. The control for error can be found at the back of each card.

2.6 – Multiplying Equal Groups of Objects

• This set of 16 cards requires the use of multiplication bead bars. The children create arrays of beads and provide the product. They can also determine the bead bars necessary to form a given product. For example: take 5 blue five-bars and write the product, or another example says to take out enough five-bars to equal 50. Control for errors can be found on the back of each card.

2.7 – Composing/Decomposing Numbers

• This set of 24 cards offers practice adding and subtracting, within 1000, 3 digit numbers using word problems. Standard 2.7 states the following: “Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.” (corestandards.org). Children will write equations and solve them using a variety of Montessori materials (pegboard, bead frame).

2.8 – Working with plane/solid shapes

• This set of 24 cards encourages children to compose and decompose 2D or 3D shapes to create new shapes. This experience will prepare the learners for advanced concepts such as congruence, similarities, symmetry, and volume. In the example below, we used the constructive triangles from primary level to build any figure that would have 4 sides and 4 vertices. This set is complementary to the work done in parallel in geometry using the geometry nomenclatures cards, and the geometry box of sticks.

2.9 – Measuring and Estimating Lengths

• This set of 60 cards contains multiples means to practice measurement and estimation. Children are invited to use materials in their environment to measure small and large objects such as a paper clip or a timeline. Measurements are done using the customary or the metric system (inches, feet, or decimeters, meters). A number line is used as well to measure the distance between 2 given numbers. The last cards are dedicated to time telling. For this work, you will need clock templates or clock template stamps.

2.10 – Interpreting/Representing Data

• This set of 15 cards encourages children to create visual data in the form of pictographs, or bar graphs, in up to four categories, as prescribed by Standard 2.10: representing and interpreting data. This work consists of creating pictographs on paper and plotting data.

2.11 – Solving Multi Steps Word Problems

• This set of 8 cards challenges children to process multiple data through a word problem. For example, the problem might give information on someone’s earnings. It will ask how much would this person makes after a certain time has elapsed. The variables in the problem may change to increase the challenge.
