How it works

Once you have set up the cards in a compartmentalized container, and labeled each drawer, you can conduct “key experience” presentations before the child begins to work with a component. For example, we started with the red cards (A1-A10), which is work on alphabetizing. know that the work increasing in complexity. Here are the steps we followed:

Worksheets in individual pouches
  • Provide a record tracking sheet to the child and a notebook or paper to copy their work.
  • Demonstrate how to select work, and work with it.
  • Each set contains labels in capital letters to state the work’s purpose and categories (example: [CAPITALIZATION]).
  • Put the labels on top, and work in columns with the materials. It’s quite self-explanatory!
  • When done studying the work by categorizing it, the child can copy this work to their notebook or on a sheet of paper to store in a section dedicated to Word Study (see pictures below).
  • Show the child how to keep track of their work using the Record Tracking Sheet.
  • Each color represents a component to study. It is imperative that the child asks for a lesson before moving on to the next colored section.
  • The worksheets are an extension to the work that the child may accomplish at will. I made copies and stored them in the colored pouches (see pictures). The worksheets are bundled in a packet and can be kept in the child’s binder while working with them.

  1. Would you be willing to share your tracking record? It would be nice if Alison’s would add this to their package. Also, what order did you have your students do the work in? I have this package and that info would help me utilize it more successfully in my classroom. It is hard to manage 5000 cards, so I like your solution. Thanks!

  2. I agree with Gwen! We have Alison’s material at our school too and having a track record would be helpful. Would you be willing to share the track record with me as well? thank you!
